The Ghosts

These are the "ghosts" of Romania, the children from people who, for all practical purposes, do not exist. The families live in concrete buildings without heat or water or windows. When the harsh winters come, they board up the windows and light fires on the floor.

I didn't know the language and, even if I had, I wouldn't have known what to say. So I stood there and made funny faces, surrounded by a flock of little, laughing, "invisible" friends.
