Orphan

The room was filled with crying babies as I walked in. She stood up in her crib and her eyes locked onto my face from across the room. "She's the smart one," the nurses said.

I took a few pictures and picked her up and held her for awhile. She didn't make a sound, not even as I put her gently back into the crib she was sharing with two other children. Instead she stood silently holding onto the rail and watched me until I left the room. I will never forget her.
