Prayer

Take these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don't make a fist
Take this mouth
So quick to criticise
Take this mouth
Give it a kiss

- Bono/Edge, "Yahweh"

I wonder how many blogs have quoted that prayer recently? I just read it on Matt V's blog.

yes, it sad but true: i am not the edgy radical i thought myself to be. i am just another swimmer in the mainstream, just swimming and swimming, admiring u2 like every other faux-po-mo evangelical refugee out there.

but when those words came through my headphones today, they vibrated all the way through me. so what can i do?

Funny thing. When I read the first line I instantly remembered some similar words penned by an edgy radical of years past:
"This is my body in all its weakness and complexity. This is what I have to offer.
This is my worship: a reflection of the grace and glory of God.
This is my will: a choice to allow his strength to work through me.
This is my defense: a safety and a protection to the ones in need of refuge.
This is my work: a labour of love and sacrifice.
This is my compassion: a place to hold another's pain.
This is my prayer: a partnership on earth in the holy work of heaven.
This is nothing short of transformation, simple incarnation. In the everyday moments, great and small, we display the living, breathing body of Christ. In the midst of the mundane, we become the hands of God."

Written before U2 put out their last album. Though it does lack a good guitar riff and rock star irishman's voice. Those two things go a long way.

yikes. it's a little strange when your own words come around to jump on you from behind. as far as a guitar riff goes, i might be able to come up with something, but the singing irishman is going to be a little more difficult. anyway, thanks. it was kind of you to remember this.

I'll be VERY impressed in Patrick has taken it upon himself to memorize your poetry, Peter. From/by heart, Patrick?
