In The Wash

Do you ever get the feeling sometimes that somewhere along the way you've missed a turn, but you're not sure where? In fact, you can't really even remember seeing any other roads go by, at least not for a long time. But you're looking around at all the scenery and you're thinking that it all looks a little strange and unfamiliar. When was the last time you saw a sign? And where is that map anyway? Maybe there was a fork in the road back there during that stretch where you were really tired from driving all night and maybe you flew right by it. Maybe it's this dirty windshield with that big ugly crack running across it. Or maybe it's your eyes, dry and red from lack of sleep. Whatever it is, doesn't it seem like you're off track somewhere? Something just isn't right here. Do you ever feel this way?
It's times like this when a little fresh water would be nice, something to splash on my face, something running down over the head and shoulders, something reminding me of grace. Anyone know where I can find something like that?

There's an interesting sci-fi story I read many years ago -- your basic scenario of the existence of parallel universes in which all possible kinds of lives are lived out. I still remember the story, because for years I had the uncanny feeling that you describe -- of having missed a turn, having somehow broken a strand of some sort of ... destiny?
I wish I had some sage words of wisdom, or at least a shiny happy ending to report for your benefit, but in my limited experience, grace comes in a trickle more often than in a splash. It's hard to notice at first, the way a drop of cool water on a hot stone makes little difference in the stone's temperature. But over time, the drops add up and the steady trickle can do quite a lot to soothe tired eyes and clear the windshield for the remainder of the journey.
Maybe it's not that the road forked so much as you drove into the weeds. Maybe you should start looking closer at the weeds, then maybe you will see they are adding great life to the road and the journey back won't seem so bad. Is there a parable for silence, if so, it's probably too hard to hear
Peter, you ARE finding that trickle, that splash of cool water. I see that refreshment in every photo you post. Just close your eyes and feel it.
thanks, everyone.
